Mayakoba’s El Camaleón Golf Course to Host North America’s First LIV Golf League Tournament of 2023

The 595-acre eco-destination on the Riviera Maya will welcome the world’s best golfers to kick off the official LIV Golf League February 24-26

QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO – NOVEMBER 29, 2022 – Mayakoba, a 595-acre luxury oceanfront resort and residential destination in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, announced today a pioneering new partnership with LIV Golf. The resort, and its acclaimed golf course, El Camaleón, will be the first stop of the season in North America and LIV Golf League’s first ever tournament in Latin America, as the ground-breaking professional golf league begins play in February 2023. “LIV Golf Mayakoba” is currently scheduled to take place on February 24-26, 2023, with a Pro-Am tournament on February 23.

The announcement comes on the heels of the 16th anniversary of the PGA TOUR’s flagship event in Mexico, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba (formerly the Mayakoba Golf Classic), which was the first official event on the PGA TOUR schedule outside of the United States and Canada.

El Camaleón was designed by golf legend and LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner, Greg Norman, and is ranked as one of the top courses in Mexico by Golf Digest and one of the favourite destinations for professional players. Weaving through the distinct ecosystems of Mayakoba, including tropical jungle, dense mangroves, freshwater canals, and pristine Riviera Maya oceanfront, El Camaleón is considered one of the most diverse golf courses in the world.

“Mayakoba is honored to have been a pioneer for golf within Mexico and Latin America over the past 16 years, and we are incredibly proud of the outstanding players who have found success competing at Mayakoba during this time, from Carlos Ortiz, Armando Favela and Abraham Ancer to Jon Rahm and Eugenio Chacarra,” says Borja Escalada, CEO of RLH Properties. “We could not be more excited to continue this pioneering legacy with LIV Golf, a true industry innovator, and to bring back the best Mexican golfers to play in their home country. We are sure that this alliance will continue to allow us to show the rest of the world all that Mexico, Quintana Roo, Riviera Maya and Mayakoba have to offer.

“RLH Properties’ decision to partner with LIV Golf cements Mayakoba’s position as a trailblazer for professional golf in Mexico. Together, we seek to continue to bolster the popularity and development of the sport, generating opportunities for golf professionals to enhance their careers and grow the game globally. We are very grateful to the PGA TOUR for being a wonderful partner over the years and look forward to continuing to support both professional golfers and golf fans around the world”.

In addition to El Camaleón, Mayakoba boasts four meaningfully placed luxury hotels – Andaz Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Fairmont Mayakoba and Rosewood Mayakoba – as well as three collections of private residences, including Rosewood Residences Mayakoba, Fairmont Heritage Place Mayakoba, and The Reserve. The sought-after oceanfront destination offers an abundance of lifestyle experiences including four acclaimed spas, more than 25 restaurants with eclectic cuisines, array of recreational pursuits through Mayakoba Experiences, the Dive and Water Sports Center and Mayakoba Dive School, and El Pueblito, a village square that serves as an event space modeled after the historic colonial plazas of Mexico.

“Securing Mayakoba and El Camaleón among LIV Golf’s roster of venues is an incredible asset that will no doubt help to ensure the success of our events globally,” says Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf. “The course itself will present players with a variety of shot options to test both individual skills and teamwork amid a diverse landscape of oceanfront holes, mangrove jungle, and more. Away from the fairways and greens, Mayakoba offers an immaculate beachfront destination and breadth of recreational experiences to showcase the beauty of Riviera Maya while also providing exceptional service to players and fans alike. We are grateful to RLH Properties for their trust and support of the LIV Golf League in hosting this event at Mayakoba in 2023”.

This event is made possible through a strategic alliance with Ciudad Mayakoba, the first comprehensive and sustainable master planned community in the Riviera Maya. Mayakoba Country Club, a new residential development located within Ciudad Mayakoba, is currently under construction and will bring further offerings to the destination, including a new golf course designed by renowned Spanish golfer and LIV Golf star, Sergio Garcia, slated to debut in 2024, as well as wellness-oriented amenities, extensive green space and a Beach Club.
