Celebrate Day Of The Dead 2024 In Mayakoba: A Journey To Eternity

Experience the mysticism of this Mexican holiday in the Riviera Maya.

Day of the Dead—known as Día de Muertos—is one of the most beloved traditions in Mexico. Every year on November 1 and 2, this holiday is a reminder that death is but a part of life, and that the deep connections made in the physical plane transcend the afterlife. As Mexicans build altars and welcome their dearly departed for a visit during Día de Muertos, Mayakoba, set in the heart of the Riviera Maya, becomes the perfect setting to forge a connection with this holiday’s festive and spiritual meaning.

From October 3 to November 3, 2024, delve into a Day of the Dead event experience within Mayakoba’s earthly paradise. Make your way to the realm of eternity through unique experiences: Voyage Along Life’s Waterways, a boat tour through Mayakoba’s iconic canals—from October 31 to November 3 from 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM—and a festive After-Dead Celebration on November 1, from 9:00 PM to midnight.

Read on for details on the upcoming celebrations held at Mayakoba at its four award-winning resorts: Andaz Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba,  Fairmont Mayakoba, and Rosewood Mayakoba

Immerse Yourself in Artistic Creation as You Traverse the Mayakoba Lagoon

Encounter the tradition of Día de Muertos with unique altars or ofrendas, which translates as “offering,” showcased within each resort. These stunning installations, decorated by the creative team at each of Mayakoba’s four resorts, honor the tradition of Day of the Dead at its core. Historically, Mexicans place a Día de Muertos altar at home with candles, cempasúchil flowers, their loved ones’ photos, and a few of their favorite dishes and drinks, waiting for their return during the holiday.

Then commence , your journey on the water. Mayakoba’s charming boats come to life for the celebration, boasting the bright orange of cempasúchil flowers (marigolds). Feel the rhythm of soft music in the air as you listen to tales, legends, and stories shared by the Messenger of the Ancestors, the wise guide in charge of leading your boat along the water.

As you embark on this experience with fellow travelers, prepare to delight your senses. Each turn provides a new opportunity to connect with human creation and expression through Ephemeral Encounters. As the journey comes to an end, you’ll reach a mystical atmosphere, completed by visual treats.

Mayans believed caves and cenotes were sacred portals to the underworld, inhabited by Chaak, the god of rain. As you glide along Mayakoba’s waterways, feel the energy of the universe that lies below the water: caves and rivers that flow and connect our world with the beyond.
